![]() The only way Next of Kin really improves on Paranormal Activity’s past is by moving the series’ action out of southern California (spookiest of all locations) to rural Pennsylvania. ![]() Next of Kin director William Eubank and writer/franchise vet Christopher Landon seem to look back on the original Paranormal Activity’s ethos of “less is more” with a laugh and a shake of the head. The young filmmakers Next of Kin follows aren't the most exciting bunch. Next of Kin even flirts with slow motion at times, first introducing it as a joke but later calling back the camera’s function in egregious fashion during a death scene. It’s a moment of sensory overload, but one that has no real impact because of the distracting conflict between what it can look like versus, based on the reality of the story, what it should look like. On the first night, Margot’s estranged grandfather Jacob (Tom Nowicki) has the village’s kids sing a creepy song and the camera glides around the room, in for closeups of slamming fists and faces of Amish folk that we’ve been expressly told at this point hate being filmed. There are even scares that veer straight into derivative territory, calling to mind better-executed moments from more confident films ( fans may start to get deja vu at times during the third act).įurther, Next of Kin sometimes seems to drop the found-footage conceit altogether for no clear reason, and not when it would make sense, like when the characters are being chased by a demon. The film takes very few risks in constructing its scares, with a number of long pans around dark rooms ending with something popping out from the location second down your list of most likely places to be surprised from. Too often, Next of Kin is shot like any old found-footage horror movie, so how scary you find it will rely heavily on your experience with the franchise and with the subgenre in general… that is to say, if you’re familiar with either, it’s not very scary. While Next of Kin’s more professional cinematography is crisp and less static than previous Paranormal Activity movies, it loses the distinct visual language the locked-off surveillance-style angles gave earlier entries in a sea of samey handheld horror. What we said about the last Paranormal Activity movieĮric Goldman gave 2015's Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension a 6/10, writing that it "lacks impact as far as wrapping up such a long-running series and our investment with the people and situations we’ve seen since it began."Ĭonsumer camera tech is a crucial component of making a found-footage horror film feel authentic and immediate. Samuel agrees to introduce Margot to her long-lost family, so she travels deep into the woods to the Beiler farm with hired sound guy Dale (Dan Lippert) and partner Chris (Roland Buck III), a cinematographer whose pricey gear gives the Paranormal Activity franchise a major visual facelift, for better or worse. She makes contact with Samuel Beiler (Henry Ayres-Brown), a relative taking a year off from his Amish community. The first question of found-footage, and the hardest to continue to answer throughout the film: who are these people and why won’t they put their damn cameras down!? Next of Kin goes with the old standby of “documentary filmmakers, one of which is the subject of the documentary.” That’s Margot (Emily Bader), a young woman looking for her birth family. That’s putting the cart before the horse in a big way, though: Next of Kin brings nothing new to either the Paranormal Activity franchise or found-footage horror, making it a disappointment on multiple fronts. Rather than furthering the established continuity, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin reboots the found-footage stalwart for Paramount+, setting up new villains and demons should audiences connect with this film in the same way they did with the original. Cheap to make, Paramount and later Blumhouse quickly started churning out sequels that introduced new camera gimmicks and a surprisingly deep mythology, but also increasingly strained credulity around why any of these people are still filming instead of running for the hills. There’s no better avatar for that transition than the Paranormal Activity franchise, which like Blair Witch, has its roots in a viral internet campaign that catapulted the austere first film to massive box office success. Unfortunately, years and years of focus on the latter aspect of the subgenre has taken focus away from the former. When it’s done right, found-footage horror can be terribly imaginative and immersive while remaining budget friendly. ![]() 29.Īs someone whose roots in horror are very tied up in the release of 1999’s The Blair Witch Project, I’ve been an ardent champion of found footage for a long time. These “ white elephant” monuments are often more aimed to score political points than benefit civilians. One of the most striking is a 58-meter, 1,200-ton statue of Guan Yu, a widely worshipped military figure from the third century Eastern Han Dynasty. In recent years around China, politicians have invested in large-scale “signature buildings” to set their cities apart. Statue of Guan Yu in Jingzhou Park, China Laura Boldrini, a member of parliament with the center-left Democratic party, told EuroNews that the monument was "an offense to women and to the history it is supposed to celebrate." Still, the city’s mayor, Antonio Gentile defended "La Spigolatrice" on Facebook, writing it’s a “very important work of art which will be a great tourist attraction for our town.” For his part, the sculptor, Emanuele Stifano, said he was “appalled and disheartened” by the criticism and that he tries not to hide the human form, for both his male and female sculptures. Many politicians, pointed out that her appearance took away from the deeper meaning of the poem. But instead of being praised for honoring their country’s literary heritage, authorities in the province of Sapri faced criticism for the statue’s see-through dress. The 1857 poem written by Luigi Mercantini depicts the female gleaner who joined the Italian revolutionary Carlo Pisacane's failed campaign against the Kingdom of Naples. The goal was to construct a statue honoring the heroine of “La Spigolatricen di Sapri” (“The Gleaner of Sapri”). "The Gleaner of Sapri" statue in her see-through dress One of the very few things I promised them was that you might not like everything that I do, but you're never going to say I sat around and didn't do anything.” As Pucket told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, “The voters obviously don't see the importance of that, but they knew going in. Still, Pucket said he doesn’t regret the project, which he hopes the new administration will finish and convert into an Airbnb. Pucket ended up losing by a whopping 95%, and now the uncompleted 19-foot-tall bird literally casts a shadow over Fitzgerald. The project has so far cost the town some $291,000 and became a point of contention during the recent mayoral election. The mayor's dream to build a tourist attraction (including a live cam showing building progress) soon turned fowl. The project was inspired by the wild Burmese chickens that run around the town. Jim Puckett, the mayor of Fitzgerald, Georgia, was not playing chicken when he decided to construct the world’s largest topiary. In 2010, the southern city of Zhaoqing in Guangdong province tore down a 38-meter Guan Yu statue worth 30 million Chinese yuan ($4.6 million) after it, too, was condemned as an illegal construction. The giant chicken imagined by former Mayor Jim Puckett, stopped mid-construction It was not the first short-lived Guan Yu statue under China’s construction spree. Local bureaucrats told Beijing News last week that the demolition would take two months, and parts of the statue would be stored somewhere temporarily until a new location is approved. It’s unclear where the statue would be moved to. The ministry later named the Guan Yu statue as a violation of the rule. Last year, China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban‑Rural Development issued a directive warning against the construction of gargantuan, out-of-touch statues in the name of promoting tourism or traditional culture. But its hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual revenues could barely cover operational costs, according to reports by news outlet Shangyou. ![]() Its original entry fee of 120 Chinese yuan ($17) was lowered to 40 yuan ($6) in 2019, while local residents could enter for free. ![]() It was designed by Chinese artist Han Meilin, widely known as the creator of the mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.īut the park did not become popular as the officials had hoped. Not all of these images appear in each of the decorated caves – some feature only handprints or megafauna. Uncannily, given the distances that separate them, all are adorned with similar decorations: handprints or stencils of human hands, abstract designs containing dots and crosshatched lines, and large animals, both carnivores and herbivores, most of them now extinct. They have been found on every continent except Antarctica – at least 350 of them in Europe alone, thanks to the cave-rich Pyrenees – with the most recent discoveries in Borneo (2018) and Croatia (April 2019). Today, almost a century later, we know that Lascaux is part of a global phenomenon, originally referred to as “decorated caves”. This was the famous and touristically magnetic Lascaux cave, which eventually had to be closed to visitors lest their exhalations spoil the artwork. “We were completely crazy,” yet another said, although the build-up of carbon dioxide in a poorly ventilated cave may have had something to do with that. Another recalled that the painted animals in the flickering light of the boys’ lamps seemed to be moving. One of the boys later reported that, stunned and elated, they began to dart around the cave like “a band of savages doing a war dance”. The hole led to a cave, the walls and ceilings of which were covered with brightly coloured paintings of animals unknown to the 20th-century Dordogne – bison, aurochs and lions. They found the dog and much more, especially on return visits illuminated with paraffin lamps. A quick search revealed that their animal companion had fallen into a hole in the ground, so – in the spirit of Tintin, with whom they were probably familiar – the boys made the perilous 15-metre descent to find it. As the story goes – and there are many versions of it – they had been taking a walk in the woods near the town of Montignac when the dog accompanying them suddenly disappeared. In 1940, four teenage boys stumbled, almost literally, from German-occupied France into the Paleolithic age. |
